Europe’s Old New Faces
Ten promising young directors from the new European countries draw a picture of their country on the basis of a monument. Some of those monuments are timeless, others have ceased to exist.. Ten absorbing and personal movies.
They are countries that are changing and modernizing with the times and; therefore, the old sculptures that signify a time gone by have to come down from their pedestals. Empty Pedestals asks uncomfortable questions. Why? Who will replace them? Perhaps the citizens themselves. The “Turn of the Millennium Monument Honouring Lodz Residents ” is a paved-road. Anybody who so desired could leave his name engraved in a stone. Sometimes it´s enough if a monument is newly unveiled. This happened in Budapest. A simple white sheet was enough to drive out the spirit of communism. All monuments hide stories. They´re part of a city, of a destiny. They are symbols, reminders, meeting-points or sign-posts. Whimsical relics which take yesterday´s hopes into the new dawn.
