Inside The War

This artistic 3D feature documentary will make World War One an up-close experience.

Stereoscopic photographs, popularly known today as 3D images, were a world-wide mass medium from 1880 to the end of WWI. A treasure trove of over 20,000 photographs unpublished for decades, many in colour having been hand-painted shortly after they were taken, provides the basis for this first historical documentary in 3D. They are accompanied by quotes taken from diaries and letters telling of love and hate, brutal killing and deep friendship, from hunger and celebrations – universal experiences that know no borders. This chorus of memories combines to form one voice and makes the events of World War One personal and very immediate to the viewer. Award-winning director Andres Veiel (“Black Box GDR” 2001; “If not us, who?” 2011) will be responsible for the dramaturgy. The film begins in the splendour of the pre-war world, with the parades of the German Empire, the coronation of Edward VIII of England, with the festivals, the cheers and enthusiasm of the people for their monarchies. From the height of this imperial grandeur the action tips into the frenzy of World War One enthusiasm. It finally arrives at the great battles where the incredible brutality of trench warfare took place. Even here we find not only witnesses to brutal violence, but also to those of longing, tenderness and hope. The film ends in peace, with victory celebrations in the United Kingdom and the United States, with the first Republic being declared on German soil. An open end – the twentieth century had only just begun…
